While the physician is ultimately responsible for CPT and diagnosis code selection, each member of the ophthalmic team plays a vital part in coding and documentation of the medical record. 

Topics for this four hour course designed to assist the ophthalmic team to appropriately code for proper reimbursement are:

  • Daily chart notes covering all specialties,
  • E&M vs. Eye Code,
  • Modifier application,
  • Unilateral vs. bilateral testing services,
  • Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) edits,
  • Postoperative notes,
  • PQRI and E-Prescribing.
  • RAC, CERT, FMR, and OIG audit updates.

AAPC Continuing Education Units  — This program has prior approval of the American Academy of Professional Coders for 4 Continuing Education Units. Granting of this approval in no way constitutes endorsement by the Academy of the program, content or the program sponsor.

JCAHPO CE Credits — Ophthalmic Allied Health Professionals receive 4 JCAHPO “A” CE credit for completion of this course.

CME Credits for physicians — The American Academy of Ophthalmology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Academy of Ophthalmology designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Elizabeth Cottle CPC, OCS 
Elizabeth is Associate Administrator of the Casey Eye Institute at OHSU, in Portland, Oregon, responsible for department compliance activities. She is a Certified Professional Coder with a “Specialty Proficient” credential in Ophthalmology by the AAPC. Elizabeth has over 30 years healthcare experience, 20 in ophthalmology.

Byrd Evans, OCS
Byrd is Vice President, Revenue Cycle Operations for Advantage Administration. She has over 20 years of healthcare consulting and management experience primarily in ophthalmology. Byrd has been the administrator of several ophthalmology practices and has extensive experience in human resources, medical billing, coding, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and accounting.

Nancy Faires, OCS
Nancy has been involved in the management of medical practices for the past 30 years, the last 20 focusing on ophthalmic administration. Her background includes medical billing, coding, reimbursement, compliance and assisting with medical procedures. She is currently employed as the Practice Administrator with Colorado Retina Associates, P.C. in Denver, Colorado.

Stephen Kamenetzky MD, OCS
Formerly Secretary for Practice Management for the AAO, Steve is currently the chair of the Ophthalmic Coding Module Series and represents the Academy at the AMA  Relative Value Update Committee (RUC) where reimbursement issues are addressed.

Kim Ross, OCS, CPC
Kim is the Academy's coding specialist, the contributing author of the Ophthalmic Coding Coach and the Ophthalmic Coding Module Series. Kim’s 34 year ophthalmic background includes all aspects of clinic and surgical assistance, ophthalmic photography, practice management, coding, reimbursement and compliance.

Sue Vicchrilli, COT, OCS
Sue's 28 year ophthalmic background includes all aspects of coding, reimbursement, practice management, clinic and surgical assistance. Sue is the Academy's coding executive, the author of EyeNet's Savvy Coder and AAOE's Coding Bulletin, the Ophthalmic Coding Coach, Code This Case and the Ophthalmic Coding Module Series.
