Installing and Updating Browsers

The Academy's site is best viewed with Internet Explorer 6 or higher. Several other modern browsers (see list) are also acceptable. You can update your browser to the newest Internet Explorer by following the instructions below:

  1. Visit Microsoft's Internet Explorer home page.
  2. Follow the instructions for downloading the latest browser version.
  3. Save the browser installer in an easily remembered location on your computer. 
  4. After the download is complete, return to where you saved the browser installer. 
  5. Double-click the installer's icon to begin installation. 
  6. Follow the step-by-step instructions to complete installation. 
  7. Restart your system to begin using the new browser.

Accepting Cookies

Cookies are packets of data sent to your computer and stored on your hard drive when you view or maneuver around a Web site with your browser. Cookies remember where you have visited within a site and play a role in making sure you get the items you want when you shop in an online store.

In order to access the Academy's Web site, you must be able to accept cookies. Internet Explorer is set up to accept cookies as a default.

You can review and change your browser's ability to accept cookies by following the instructions below:

1. Internet Explorer:

  • Select Internet Options from the Tools menu. 
  • Select the Security tab. 
  • Highlight the Internet icon and click the Default Level button. 
  • Click the OK button to finish.

2. Firefox:

  • Select Options from the Tools menu. 
  • On the Privacy tab, select Cookies/Accept Cookies
  • Click the OK button to finish.

3. Safari:

  • Select Safari / Preferences.
  • On the Security tab, check Accept Cookies.
  • Click the OK button to finish.

Deleting or Clearing your Cookies and Cache

Sometimes it is necessary for you to clear out your cookies and temporary Internet files, or cache- particularly if you get an error while browsing or using the Web site so that the browser does not hold on to any old or incorrect information and get caught up in an error loop. Be aware that by deleting all of your cookies, you will need to go back to any sites that store login information and re-enable this functionality.

To clear out your cookies and your cache, select your browser type from the list below:

Clearing your cookies

1. Internet Explorer for Windows

  • From the browser menu, select Tools, then the General tab.
  • In the Temporary Internet Files section, click on the button that says Delete Cookies.
  • Then click OK.

2. Internet Explorer for Macintosh

  • From the Explorer menu, select Preferences.
  • Scroll down to the Receiving Files menu.
  • Select Cookies, and remove aao.org cookies individually or remove all cookies at once.

3. Safari

  • From the Safari menu, select Preferences, then select Security.
  • From the Security menu, click on Show Cookies and remove aao.org cookies individually or remove all cookies at once.

4. Firefox

  • From the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, then check Cookies / OK

Clearing your Temporary Internet Files or Cache

1. Internet Explorer for Windows

  • For a quick single-page cache clear, hold down CTRL Key and click refresh or F5
  • From the browser menu, select Tools, then Internet Options.
  • From the General tab in the Temporary Internet Files section, click on Delete Files
  • Click OK.

2. Internet Explorer for Macintosh

  • For a quick single-page cache clear, hold down Apple Key and click refresh
  • From the browser menu, select Explorer, then Preferences,.
  • In the Web Browser menu, select Advanced.
  • Click on Empty Now in the Cache section.
  • Then click OK.

3. Safari

  • For a quick single-page cache clear, hold down Apple Key and click refresh
  • From the browser menu, select Safari, then Empty Cache.
  • From the pop up menu, select Empty.

4. Firefox

  • For a quick single page cache clear, hold down CTRL Key and click refresh or F5
  • From the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, then check Cache / OK

Changing Your Homepage to AAO.org

To make the Academy's site the first page you see when you open your browser, follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to the Academy's home page (www.aao.org). 
  2. Select Internet Options from the Tools menu. 
  3. Select the General tab. 
  4. Highlight Use Current under Home Page. 
  5. Click the OK button to finish.

Saving AAO.org as a Link/Bookmark

You can create direct links/bookmarks to your favorite pages in the Academy's Web site by following the instructions below:

  1. Go to the Academy page you want to link to.
  2. Select the icon for the page from the Address bar.
  3. Drag the icon to your Links bar and release.

Returning to Pages You've Read

To return to pages you've already read during your current session or during a previous session, follow the instructions below:

  1. To return to a page you've just visited, select the Back button on the toolbar.
  2. To return to a page you've visited in a previous session, select the History button.
  3. From the History bar, select the week or day, open the AAO folder to display the pages you've visited and select the page you wish to view.

Printing a Page

To print a page, follow the instructions below:

  1. Select Print from the File menu and select your printing options.
  2. Click the OK button to finish.

              or

  1. Select the Print icon from the Tool bar.

Saving a Page

To save a page, follow the instructions below:

  1. Select Save As from the File menu and select the location for the page.
  2. Click the OK button to finish.

Adjusting Default Font Size

  1. Select Text Size from the View menu.
  2. Select which size you would like to use.
