SAN FRANCISCO -- Jane Aguirre, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Vice President for Global Alliances, was recently named president of Ophthalmic Women Leaders (OWL), which promotes professional development, networking opportunities and personal growth for women in ophthalmology. With sponsorship and support from leading ophthalmic trade organizations, OWL counts 400 members and is growing rapidly.

 “It’s a real honor to lead this dynamic organization.  OWL has pizzazz,” said Ms. Aguirre, who co-founded OWL in 2003 and served as treasurer through 2007. “Last year OWL’s network expanded into Europe.  I look forward to strengthening the connections among women in ophthalmology in the United States and abroad.”

“Jane Aguirre will be a magnificent leader,” said Jaci Lindstrom, outgoing OWL president.

Ms. Aguirre joined the Academy staff in 1981 and previously served as the Vice President of Ophthalmic Practice.  In her current position she facilitates collaboration among international societies to advance ophthalmic education worldwide.
