H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD to receive the 2009 Catalyst Award of the Glaucoma Research Foundation

SAN FRANCISCO – The American Academy of Ophthalmology is pleased to announce that its executive vice president, H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD, will be the recipient of the 2009 Catalyst Award, the highest honor granted by the Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF), in acknowledgment of exceptional leadership in sustaining innovative research and education. The Award will be presented at GRF's 31st Anniversary benefit celebration on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco.

“It is an honor to be receiving this prestigious award from the GRF,” said Dr. Hoskins, “I am very proud of the work this organization does, and I feel privileged to be a part of their mission to advance research and education. ”

Dr. Hoskins has been the executive vice president of the Academy since January 1, 1993, after a distinguished career in private practice. He also serves as clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University Of California School Of Medicine, San Francisco. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Academy's Distinguished Service award in 1999, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 and the A. Edward Maumenee award of the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Hoskins is an internationally known glaucoma specialist, having authored or co-authored more than 80 publications and presented more than 300 invited lectures. He has held numerous other positions in ophthalmology, medicine and business. Among them, Chairman of St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center San Francisco, Chairman of Mercy Services Corporation, founder and Chairman of Medem Corporation, Founding Director of the American Glaucoma Society, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, the American Eye Study Club and the American Glaucoma Society. He is a member of the International Council of Ophthalmology.

Born in Virginia, Dr. Hoskins, the son of an ophthalmologist, received his medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia, where he did his internship and residency. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1970 and did his Glaucoma Fellowship at the University of California School San Francisco Medical Center. He served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Naval Hospital in Rhode Island in 1968.

The father of three, he lives with his wife, Ann, in Belvedere, located outside San Francisco. He continues his glaucoma practice in San Francisco.

The theme of GRF’s 31st Anniversary benefit is "Speeding the Cure. Spreading the Word”. According to GRF President and CEO Thomas M. Brunner, “Dr. Hoskins is the embodiment of the qualities we see reflected in so many of the gifted physicians dedicated to serving those with glaucoma."
