Can astigmatism shift from one eye to the other?
MAR 23, 2024
Question:
After a visit to my ophthalmologist, I noticed my new prescription shows astigmatism in my left eye while I have always had it my right. Wondering if this was a typo or if astigmatism can actually shift from one eye to the other?
Answer:
The eye shape and prescription of the eyes have the potential to change over time. In some cases, the changes can be significant. These changes can be due to change in shape of the cornea, lens, or eyeball itself.
Astigmatism, which is distortion in the shape of the eye, is measured by a refraction performed in the office. It is a subjective test where a patient's answers may vary with each visit. If you are unsure if the prescription you received is correct, please discuss this with your eye doctor.
