Question:
How is it that diabetes can cause cataracts to form?
Answer:
Cataracts are significantly more common in those with diabetes. It is believed to result from high glucose (a type of sugar in the blood that the body uses for energy) in the aqueous humor, which is the liquid in front of the lens. The glucose can accelerate the build up of proteins on the lens that lead to cataract. Age, duration of disease, and poorly managed diabetes are linked with cataract progression. Controlling blood sugar may slow the development of cataracts.
