In this 1-Minute Video, Dr. Edward Wladis demonstrates how to use intraductal probing to open scarred meibomian glands. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or with very mild sedation. Using a hyfrecator tip—which he finds sturdier than a Maskin probe—he pokes the scarred meibomian gland tissue to release its contents. A faint petechial hemorrhage at the orifice indicates an egress of normal contents. This technique helps to rehabilitate the ocular surface with very minimal postoperative down time.
