  • Is it safe to use an eyeball massager after cataract surgery?

    Question:
After cataract surgery two years ago without complications, is it safe to use an eyeball massager?

    Answer:
To my knowledge, none of these devices have been proven to provide health benefits to your eyes, although they may be enjoyable to use.  It is known that direct pressure on the eyeball and chronic eye rubbing can cause eye and eyelid damage in some individuals. For this reason, I would avoid use of these devices until well-designed research studies prove that they have benefit. In contrast to eye massagers, heated eye masks have been shown to provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) when used according to safety guidelines. This would be a safer alternative for you at present.
