Retina/Vitreous
In this interview from ASRS 2017, Dr. Rajeev Muni discusses 1-year findings from PIVOT, a randomized trial comparing pneumatic retinopexy to vitrectomy for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) repair. At 1 year, patients in the pneumatic arm gained 4.9 ETDRS more letters than patients in the vitrectomy group. Although the vitrectomy group had a 12% higher rate of anatomic success, this difference did not affect visual outcomes, and 99% of all patients in both groups achieved retinal reattachment. Patients will be followed up to 2 years, and an additional trial is currently evaluating pneumatic retinopexy in a more diverse cohort.
