Pediatric Ophth/Strabismus
Persistent pupillary membranes (PPMs) are a congenital anomaly. As remnants of the anterior tunica vasculosa lentis, they are generally asymptomatic, with no functional significance. Common in newborns and retained by about 20% of adults, they typically present as fibrous tissue across the pupil. This patient, with a history of ankylosing spondylitis as well as Stargardt disease, presented with a unique “seahorse” PPM in the lower iris of the left eye. The patient also presented with Soemmering ring in the left eye and a history of uveitis in the right eye.
