  • Global Period for Super K and AMT

We only bill for the placement of amniotic membrane on the ocular surface; without sutures (65778) when performed during the same session as a superficial keratectomy (65435) due to National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits. Our electronic health records (EHR) do not track any global period for an amniotic membrane placement, which means any rechecks following are billed. Is that accurate or should we track a global period for these patients even though CPT code 65435 was not billed?

    Answer:
Both CPT codes 65435 Removal of corneal epithelium; with or without chemocauterization (abrasion, curettage) and 65778 Placement of amniotic membrane on the ocular surface; without sutures have a 0-day global period.

Global periods are included in the Opthalmic Coding Coach.
