    Cornea/External Disease

The image shows a large corneal epithelial defect after fluorescein staining. It was a self-sustained injury in a patient new to contact lens use. Notes: A 20-year-old woman arrived in the emergency department reporting pain, watering, and foreign body sensation in the right eye for the past hour. She reported the use of contact lenses that day and indicated that the current issues started when she attempted to remove them. On examination, a large corneal epithelial defect was seen; it was most likely caused by the patient's fingernail as she removed the contact lens.
